When I purchased my copy of "Horrible Bosses" the slip cover said Blu-ray + DVD +Digital Copy. When I got home and opened the package, there was no Digital Copy. What I got instead was an insert with an invitation to Hell . I had no idea what "Ultraviolet" meant...now I do . Not compatible with iTunes? You've got to be freakn' kidding me? Digital Copy my a$$. There is no Digital Copy. All it is is permission to view a film you've already purchased via streaming...and only after jumping through hoops and downloading crap software on your PC. It took me 4 hours, after having to set up two accounts, one on Ultraviolet and another on Flixster, just to get the damn thing to work and then the quality sucked . Warner Bros really screwed the consumer on this bait-and-switch...advertising a "Digital Copy" on their packaging and then delivering a load of crap and headaches. Looks like I'll just have to rip the DVD so I can have a true digital copy for my iPod Touch.

Not again WB!!! I'm boycotting any future releases that include this Ultraviolet crap .

It's not Apple but Warner. The digital copy can only be viewed, as I understand it, via streaming online.

The concept is good. People download torrents and use decrypting software (AnyDVD) because they want to view movies how they want. So why not make a technology where you register a license for a movie, then you can watch it on any device you want (TV, phone, computer, etc.), all streamed from the Internet. Should be great, right? "Buy once, play anywhere."

It should be. However, the implementation was a monumental failure.

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/11/your-movie-on-every-platform-sort-of-for-a-while-how-the-new-ultraviolet-drm-fails.ars

In the last month or so articles and promotional material on Ultraviolet has been disappearing from the net. Looks like it was a major embarrassment and will die a quick death due to the colossal failure in market research and judgement. In my opinion, this is yet another case of corporate suits having meetings, throwing around buzzwords and acronyms with little to no thought, and perpetuating groupthink to the point of utter blind idiocy. Has happened thousands of times in thousands of situations in thousands of companies, and will happen thousands of more times as well.

Not really, not everyone have unlimited internet account... I guess a real unlimited account (I mean with no ammount of gigs used limitation) is quite costly.

Sorry Grendell, but even conceptually it's a bad idea. I don't have a mobile device to watch these, just my computer or iPod (which is how I watched all digital copies in the past), so for me, UltraViolet is a complete waste.

In addition to streaming, Ultraviolet was supposed to contain a physical digital copy for use on devices like iPod, so, it's still a good concept. But in my opinion, as long as DRM is somehow involved, it will never be a good implementation.

Since we seem to be arguing for the sake of arguing... you can't really "view films" on iPods anyway.

If a physical digital copy disc were included I wouldn't be complaining but as it stands, I feel I got ripped off. Advertising "Digital Copy" on the slip cover as they did was misleading.

I'm like TheMovieman. I only have an iPod Touch as my "mobile" device. If I'm at the beach or in my doctor's waiting room I want to be able to watch a movie any time I want. With Ultraviolet that's not possible.

The concept of storing your "Digital Copy" in a "Cloud" is a good concept but the way these clowns implemented it is a complete and utter mess. They also limit the amount of time that your "Digital Copy" will be stored in the "Cloud". The fine print says up to 3 years but I'm certain there will be problems with that as well. I'm sure there will be limits on the amount of space one is allotted to store their digital copies and once that limit is reached...no more digital copies, or you'll have to delete some to make more room, or you'll have to pay a premium to get more space. Thanks...but no thanks.

From what I recall, Ultraviolet was supposed to give you the option of burning your own copy, however that feature has been delayed.  But there most definitely was an ability to get off the stream as part of the original plan.

Even if there were an option to "burn" your own copy, Apple and Disney have opted out of Ultraviolet, and whatever format Ultraviolet chose to allow to be burned probably wouldn't be compatible with iTunes. Consumers, like myself, would then be forced to use 3rd party software to convert whatever format Ultraviolet used to be able to watch the movies on our mobile devices. Undoubtedly the format used my Ultraviolet would have DRM and that would make matters more difficult.

Being the last person to own a Microsoft Zune, this makes me chuckle. Sorry to the OP, but the irony can't be ignored. For years I have had to deal with digital copies that won't work for me despite MS making many of them, all were Apple-compatable only. It never bothered me as I'd just rip and make my own files if I wanted the movie on my device, but this is funny that something doesn't work with iTunes now. They buried every other mp3 player, so what does UV work with if not Apple?

Don't laugh...Ultraviolet doesn't work with Windows Media Player or Media Center either . You have to install Adobe AIR and the Flixster Collections App to view your Ultraviolet Digital Copy on your PC if you actually download the "Digital Copy" file. You can stream it through your web browser, but only in SD and it looks like crap on my Acer laptop...lots of pixelation in full-screen. I can't stream it through my iPod Touch because it doesn't support Ultraviolet streaming and I don't own an iPhone or smartphone. For those with iPhones, you'd better have an unlimited data plan because Ultraviolet won't stream over wifi.

I only laugh at how hard they make these "easy to use" digital copies. It's so much easier to use dvdfab or a like program to rip the movie from dvd to a wmv file that will play fine on anything and almost looks dvd quality, but the studios don't want you doing that. I'm sure they have an HD version by now also, I just haven't looked as I gave up ripping since I have a stack of favorites on my Zune already for travel (if the TV has RCA inputs, can't stand watching anything on a 4" screen).

I own two Zunes, man!

Sadly one is on its last leg as I can't add or remove music anymore, but that sucker stood strong for about 4 or 5 years now with daily use.

Your post is spot on and my feelings, too.

It's total cowpie that you can't download "your" digital copy to your mobile device. This is not going to make it if they don't change it. I don't care if I would have to use a different app or program to watch my digital copy but streaming only is utterly insane!
