| Posted: | | | | Can anyone explain to me what Pixel Depth means? I have seen that signalinfo on my receiver when looking at Blu-ray, and the depths varies from 8 -12bits as I recall. But what does it mean? | | | "What's God?" "You know when you want something really bad and you wish for it?, God's the guy that ignores you" -The Island, Steve Buscemi |

| Posted: | | | | I only know it in the context of computer images.
There the pixel depth means how many different colours a pixel can take. For example: A jpg photogrpah can display 16.78 million colours which equals 24bit colour depth. You have 256 different shades of red times 256 different shades of green times 256 different shaeds of blue = 16.78 million.
8bit colour depth would represent only 256 different colours and is about what DOS could display 20 years ago. So for Blu-ray that would be a bit low. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | The blu-ray specs are limited to 24 bit, as Tom said. However some equipment can "upscale" that to 30 and/or 36 bit. Of course your screen needs to be able to display these higher bit rates for that. The visible effect is questionable. Also known as color depth. |
