for years and years new releases always came out on Tuesdays so the cataloging etc of said title could get into the skew at your favorite rental shop.. But I see for the first time ( for me) that this weeks Amazing Spider-Man is being released on Nov 9th ( Friday) .. is this to be the new norm?

anyone in the business to know this ..?

99.9% of new releases are still on Tuesday but on occasion they will release on a Friday. IIRC, a couple of the Twilight movies were released on Saturday.

Agreed... 99.99% are still tuesdays... there are occasional odd balls and rarities... as well as some fairly established trends...

In rare cases a movie studio will do a Friday or Saturday release to try and "set apart" a tentpole title, this spiderman release is an example, as well as Movieman's example of the Twilight movies. Dreamworks animation has a pretty solid record of doing this from time to time as well. The Hunger Games for example also launched on a Saturday.

Other common themes are movies being released the day after christmas regardless of the day of the week it is to capitalize on the gift card traffic.

In some cases when there is a holiday on a monday such as Memorial Day or Labor day movie studios will set the release date to the normal tuesday, but alert retails on sunday to go ahead and sell on monday.

The same typically goes for cd's and video games, with Nintendo being the only oddball, they release all of their own first party software and hardware on Sundays.

They did the same with the UK release of Sam Raimi's first Spiderman film here in the UK. What scares me more is that was 10 years ago and I still remember it.

Edit memory isn't that good, the one I got was the second film which was released on a Friday, (got the US release of the first film).

I helped run a video store too back in the 80's  and if a title was released on a Friday.. It would then sit  in our 'box'  till the next week... if we had numerous requests for it we would double the order.. if no requests it stayed at original order  for rental .....

This is not the first time or the last, Terry. Its all about marketing and what the.powers that be think can be achieved. Usually reserved for major releases that they are trying to separate from the pack of Tuesday releases.
ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!
