| | Posted: | | | | In another thread people were talking about Blu upgrading. One of the reasons to up grade was if the current movie had a better HD version. I thought we could use this area to let each other know about releases which look especially poor. For instance I have the 1998 Widescreen Collection version of the Hunt For Red October. On my TV it only takes up the middle third and is very grainy. The sound is muffled like it was filmed under a blanket or in a wind tunnel. When it drops to the $5.00 or less category I will replace it. What films do you have that look especially bad? |

Loved this movie in the cinema and on DVD.
On BluRay it is becoming obvious how cheaply the effects were made.
This really distracts from enjoying the movie.
So if you own the DVD: Keep it an do not upgrade! | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

According to interviews Van Ling already remastered the title and is waiting that Cameron finds the time to approve this new transfer, but so far it didn't happen...  |

The old DVD I had was non-anamorphic with stereo sound with a grainy image.
The blu is (obviously) anamorphic and now has a nice DTS HD Master 5.1 track and a nice transfer (a little DNR but nothing to get your panties in a twist about IMO). |

| | Posted: | | | | This is likely due to limitations of the visual effects used back then, but Dragonslayer looks fairly bad with matte lines very evident plus clouds visible through actors.
Wish they'd remaster this and put out a good looking blu-ray. |

| | Posted: | | | | Seconded on The Abyss. As for other non-anamorphic widescreen DVD's really waiting for a better job on BluRay (or even on DVD...): True Lies, 1941. A lot of people diss 1941, but I really like the slapstick and absurd clichés. On a second level 'Medicine Man' -- not the best movie ever, but I like it and the rain forest should look magnificent in high definition. A different group is the straight from VHS to DVD copy. I have very few and luckily very unimportant ones, somewhere buried in a 2600+ collection (the DVD part). But if there are mainstream nice movies done like this, I'd like to read that too here  A marginal group would be the one that lures you into some false kind of double dip: a DVD release upscaled to BR with no effort of improvement. Bit of a VHS to DVD scam but different media. What comes to mind is "Spirited Away" (Dutch release) -- stay away, you're warned!  | | | Eric

| | Posted: | | | | Arnie was recently mentioned in another post. I have one and borrowed one of his films that looked awful. Last Action Hero I have the Full Frame DVD, it looks like shiitake mushroome. Lucky for me it was released on Blu and looks and sounds like an action movie making fun of action movies should. The worst though is Kindergarten Cop. I borrow it from my mother and it was the full frame version and damn does it look awful with garbled audio. I wish they would release it on Blu as it was a really fun movie. |
