My old version of Photoshop won't install on my new computer.

I don't really want to pirate a newer version (which was the suggestion of my coworker), though the cost of the new version + the fact that I have an older version that now doesn't work really tempts me to do so.

Does anyone know a good alternative to Photoshop?  One that's either freeware or low cost?  It also has to be relatively easy to use, as I'm not a computer expert or anything.  I am running Windows 7.

I remember someone recommending Gimp: http://www.gimpshop.com/full_version/free_photo_editing_software?gclid=CIC28vX1krYCFetFMgodmhcA9w

(All these are free.)

I have always heard good things about GIMP.  When I tried it for a while, some years ago, I found it was far more than I needed, but if you are used to Photoshop, it may be just what you need.

Another program that is highly regarded, but much simpler/more limited as far as editing, is IrfanView.  I have this installed now (under Windows 7) and have used it only a few times.

A second one I have installed right now, having read positive reviews, is PhotoScape.  It has an unusual interface, especially the opening screen, but I find it pretty user friendly—but again, I don't edit photos often.

'nother vote for GIMP.

It is a bit of a learning curve due to it's function-range, but there are User Manuals and Tutorials.
And as you are a convert from Photoshop I'd guess that you know what you want, you just have to find where to do it in GIMP.

I use Paint.NET for editing and Picasa and IrfanView for viewing/simple editing.

Gimp and Paint.Net both are great programs.

Both need a little bit of time to get used to after using Photoshop.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I always thought that Incscape was a vector graphics editor, equivalent to Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw. I've used Corel Photo Paint.

1.  Crop images.  I don't have a scanner, so if I'm adding a profile that doesn't exist I have to rely on images from the net, which often need cropping to look good.

2.  Also brighten, sharpen, etc.

3.  Edit images to make such things as layouts, avatars, buttons and things like this:

4.  Use paintbrushes and things like that

Another vote for GIMP, I've got a good routine for scanned images, only takes me a few minutes for a scan.

IrfanView is small and efficient for image view, thumbnail, information, format conversation, batch processing, snapshot, crop, color correction, resize, sharpen, rotate/straighten kind of tasks, I use it on a daily basis.

Its paint features will not fill your needs. I'd take the time to work my way into Gimp.

Thanks everybody!  I'm going to give GIMP a try and see how that goes.
