I have recently obtained a region 4 version of The Martian Chronicles to replace a region 1 version but the running times differ. The region one time is 293 minutes and the region 4 version is 281. Can anyone please tell me what is missing from the shorter version (if anything).

The TV-system in your country is PAL, right? In that case there is most likely nothing missing.

The phenomenon is called PAL-speedup.

If a 24 frames per second movie is converted to PAL the easiest way is to let it run 4% faster to get 25 frames and split those up into the necessary 50 field per second.
293 min * 0.96 = 281,3 min

cya, Mithi

PS Praise the Lords of Kobol for BD and its glorious 24p ... no more speedup.

It is as Mithi said:
Region 1 = NTSC = normal speed
Region 4 = PAL = 4% faster than normal due to the PAL speedup.

Hence PAL versions of the same content are always shorter than their NTSC counterparts.

If you know the proper un-sped-up running time of something, and want to know if your release is a possible PAL transfer, here's a good calculator conversion for that:

I've used that tool for years, and it's often come in handy.

Even some NTSC DVD's can be sourced from a PAL transfer and still retain the shorter running time.
