| Posted: | | | | I like to collect, mainly the Crime Dramas" from Mhz Networks Home Entertainment. I also like to add the original titles. I also like copy those titles rather typing them since my typing is not so great.
But the English translation of the these titles on the discs and those from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia are hardly ever the same. This leads me to wonder, exept in context and a great deal explaining can any two people speaking different languages can ever really understand each other.
Example, in most English dictionaries, the word “run” has over 100 definitions. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. Ineptocracy, You got to love it. "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." - Abraham Lincoln |

| Posted: | | | | I suppose this depends on the level of speech.
The easier the chosen words the more likely it is that the other understands what you mean. Problems arise with subtext, figures of speech and colloquialisms.
Even more complicated it gets if two people, speaking different languages, communicate in a third.
If you want to have some fun try the following: Use Google-Translate to transform your post into French and then German and then back to English. You will be surprised about the result. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Wars have started that way. The farther away two people are linguistically or culturally the more you should try using clear pattern of speech. For example, if an English guy on the streets of London asks you for a fag, he's not trying to be offensive to you. Also when you can clearly hear that the person talking to you is not talking in his native tongue you should put this into consideration if he says something that would offend you if you'd consider him a native speaker and thus assuming he said what he said with the full meaning behind it. For example, me being German, I could stumble through America, see a certain person and call him an "Indian". Because in German the term for native American is still "Indianer" (which is different from an actual Indian which is "Inder"). I didn't mean anything by it, I just didn't know any better because I'm not American and not aware of every shift in PC naming. Shaka, when the walls fell. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

But is the English translation of the title of the disc and geueyi Wikipedia the free encyclopedia It is rarely the same. With the exception of this state, and a lot of things leads me two people who speak different languages ??can understand each other so far described. For example, a definition of more than 100 word "run" from the English dictionary, the most. And these were three (comparably) related languages. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

But I think that there is no problem when there is no apriorism about what is written. Unfortunately, some people always think that they are attacked, and generally interpret what they read in a bad sense. A good solution, when we are not sure of what was meant, is to PM to the author and reformulate the sentence as it was understood. | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |
