Today I got the first season of Stargate Universe on Blu-ray in 2 half season releases.

I know I like Stargate... I have seen the movie and some of the episodes of Stargate SG-1.,,, as well as owning Stargate Atlantis (not seen any of yet). So I felt pretty confident that I would like this series as well.

But the question I have... Should these series be watched in a particular order... or are they stand alone enough that I can maybe jump around and watch the series in any order / at the same time?

SGU can basically be watched alone. It's Gilligan's Island in space (and it's awful anyway).

SGA relies on some knowledge established in SG-1 but basically everything is explained again. The only spoiler-y in it is the promotion of certain members of the original cast since SGA is starting parallel to SG-1's 8th season.

Both SG-1 and SGA follow the Sorting Algorithm of Evil trope anyway.

I've watched SG-1 and Atlantis several times now and I would not skip around.  For the full story arc, I would start with SG-1, add Atlantis once it branches off, watch the stand alone movies and then, if you feel the need, watch Universe once you are done.

Universe, while not horrid, was canceled mid run so, for me, really isn't worth the watch.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

I recommend movie, SG-1, Atlantis.  Then when you get to Universe, go watch a musical instead.  I bet you end up liking it better.

SGU is by far one of the top 3 all time best scifi series. People gave it bad reviews because it wasn't like SG-1 or SGA, which are great, but nowhere near as good as SGU. SGU is based in the same universe, has a lot of stuff from SG-1 and SGA, but the series is made very differently. Its more in line with Battlestar Galactica, then the other Stargate series.

Id watch in the order given on the first link, however i always watched a full season and didn't jump between series on an episode level.

It didn't didn't like it because it wasn't like SG-1 or SGA I didn't like it because it only had one likeably character in it (the nerd). Everyone else was an intrigaant like from a bad daily soap opera. And the lost in space angle had been done too often by this point to be interesting.

What truly weirded me out was people haveing sex in other people's bodies.

All in all there was nothing sucking me into the story the way it was told.

Let's see.  In no particular order:

Farscape
Space: Above and Beyond
Alien Nation
Firefly
Star Trek: TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise & TOS
Battlestar Galactica: Both Versions
Space: 1999
Babylon 5
Sliders
Fringe
Stargate: SG-1 & Atlantis
The Twilight Zone
The Outer Limits
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Stargate Universe, while I enjoyed it, doesn't even make my top 20 and it has nothing to do with it not being like SG-1 or SGA.

I'll happily admit that I didn't care for it because it was nothing like the first two series.  I'll even go further and say that I didn't like it because it's more in line with Battlestar Galactica.

I see nothing wrong with those statements.  The movie and first two series set a tone for Stargate.  It's not the least bit unreasonable that this forth entry would be disappointing to those fans who were there from the beginning and were expecting something more in line with what had come before.  This was something completely new and it was an unwelcome surprise by many who followed the series.

I never said it was a bad series (though I would certainly be happy to do so).  But I will say I didn't think it was a good "Stargate" series.
