Been buying DVD's now since 1997 .. and this past month bought my first Region B - a Blue Ray  of  Koyanisqatsi ..
I bought thru amazon and going back to that site today (after my disc arrival)  I do see the disclaimer that Region B may not playback in all players in North America ..

My PowerDVD16 software thru my BD ROM on my Win 10 PC I can change the region to B  and can playback the disc ..but my stand alone player in the media room is an LG BD300  deck  and it will not accept the disc ..  Probably time for a new Player  .. but wanted to through this out there ..  what can  or should I do?  ( don't necessary going to ask for a refund ) .,  Is there  quick fix to update my LG player?  or are there relatively cheap players that are region free..?  I thought all Blue ray discs were region free over standard DVD's ..

There doesn't appear to be a region free mod for your player.  Blu-ray isn't region free, but it reduced the regions from eight (DVD) down to three; Ultra Blu-ray is actually region free... finally.  Region free Blu-ray players are harder to come by, compared to DVD, since the BDA has made it "illegal", so to speak, through their licensing agreements.  Hence, the reason why we're only seeing third party mods.  That and the fact that the disc performs the region free checking vice the player as it did for DVD.

In most cases Amazon would probably refund you your cost, but at the same time that is the risk you took.

The easiest option would be to get a cheap Region B Blu-ray player, so you can buy more Region B Blu-rays in the future.

As a backup to my other methods, I bought this thing: "iVid BD-K980 Multi Region Free 4K Upscaling 3D Blu Ray DVD Player, NTSC/PAL" still available on Amazon.com.

No frills, not very stylish, but it will play anything (at least for me, so far). And a couple of added features 2xHDMI output, discrete 5.1 audio output jacks, and component output.

Alas, the component shuts down for certain HD content.

You can try THIS site if you are willing to buy a new region free BD player. I bought from them years ago, and they are still in business
I recommend them.

Why not a multi region blu ray player like this one? I bought a predecessor of the same model (the S3100, back in 2014) and have been watching DVD and BD from all over the world with no problem whatsoever.

Sony players with hardware mods are solid. I have an S5200 that I bought a couple of years back from Bombay Electronics...and it plays literally anything worldwide. I've never had a single problem or issue with it plays import locked discs. Even 50hz content is no problem.

In a way separate A and B players may be more practical than a multi-region player. The reason: there really are no region free blu-ray players. The are region selectable. That means that you have to set it to the appropriate region before trying to play a disc. And with most players, like my Oppo, you can't tell which region they are currently set for. And changing region may include taking the disc out, setting the region and turning the player off, then on again. So with separate players you just have to put the disc into the right player and you're good to go. But of course there are other practical drawbacks with two apparatuses instead of one.

If you wonder why BD players are region selectable, it's because the region checking is done differently from DVDs. For DVDs, the player asks the disc what region it is, and if it's the wrong region, the player is not supposed to play the disc. But if the player doesn't ask ...

BDs do it differently. The software on the disc asks the player what region the player is. And if the player answers with the wrong region, the disc won't play. While programs like AnyDVDHD can figure out the region for some discs, it's (currently, at least) not possible to programatically do it safely for the majority. And thus you must tell the player beforehand what region it's supposed to be.

Sadly there are few options for multi-region bluray players.  I had the opposite problem in that being in Australia we are Region B so I had to do my homework before buying from an American store to ensure the disc was region free.
But as always the grass can be greener on the other side of the fence and there were movies I really wanted on Bluray but were Region A.  I bit the bullet and bought a multi region player.  Admiringly its nit the highest quality but it works quite well (we have a brand or two in the budget range that can have the region code changed in the setup menu).

So, the best thing I can suggest is do some hunting around and various players and budgets and a lot of googling to see what brands allow region changes or modification.
