Last night in Sweden? Sweden!

What happened last night in Sweden? Not a whole lot. At least not in Casa Syrén. Actually, I kind of ran out of steam. But let me backtrack a bit.

Most of my projects start out as an intellectual challenge to myself. I get an idea, and the question is - can I do it? Sometimes the result is something simple, like AspectGuide. Sometimes it is something complex, like ProfilerQuery. Sometimes it's something useful, sometimes it's something that ends up in the bit bucket.

So, now I'm half way through another project. The object is to compare two profiles, either from the same export file, or from two different export files. And the core functionality is more or less done. It looks like this:

I think you can see where I got the inspiration.

But now I've run into a problem. The user interface for loading the profiles is way too clunky to be useful. It works for testing, but I couldn't release it as it is. I've pondered some solutions, but they are either not quite good enough, or really complex to implement. And that's where I kind of ran out of steam. The "home stretch" isn't really that interesting, just a lot of work, and I have done most of the comparisons that I were interested in, during the development.

Now I need just a tiny bit of incentive to keep this project from going into the "Abandoned projects" folder. So let me know if there is any interest in a tool like this. If there is, I can probably motivate myself to continue the project. If not ...

How about highlighting the differences or the option of hiding the items that are the same between both releases?

For my own use it wasn't really called for, but if I go ahead with the project it is obviously a possibility. At the moment each section is just a listbox, so it would take a bit of re-coding to highlight the differences, but it's certainly doable. Hiding sections that are the same - no big deal. Color coding names to show how they are parsed - a bit tricky, but still doable I think.

It ultimately depends on user interest, though.

I see that I have received a couple of greenies for my initial post. However, my grumble with greenies is that one never knows exactly what they are given for. Did the "greener" think the idea was a good one, or did they just enjoy the Trump reference. As a "greenee" I appreciate the kindness, but if you think the project is a good one, you really need to speak up. Or should that be "write up"?

And if this post should receive a greenie, I won't know if it was because someone recognized the vague and rather strained Star Trek reference, or if it was just a slip of the mouse.

What Star Trek reference, I can hear you think. Spoiler:  (Select to view)
Association by alliteration: grumble with greenies - Trouble with Tribbles.

One of the greenies was from me, because I think this is a very interesting area. Especially comparing between data bases is an issue I regularly run into...

Although I'm not able to think about it in detail right now, out if an an time issue...

Good news. I had an idea on how to handle the profile loading. So there's a good chance that the project will continue. But the amount of features still depends on the interest shown.

I gave a greenie, too, because I like the idea and I had suggested something in that direction a long time ago in the feature request forum: http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=683929

Thanks guys! At least I know that there is some interest, so I'll go ahaed. Had a tiny bit of a setback - tried to modify my existing file/profile loading UI and got it all tangled up. Ended up throwing away everything except the comparison display itself, and started over from scratch. Things like that happen sometimes.

So, SpaceFreakMicha, six years later you may perhaps get your wish. Good things come to he who waits ...

Regarding the greenies: according to the Invelos website "Positive ratings reward community members who post helpful or useful messages."
Which is a highly accurate description of the type of community member you are.

So thank you once again for all your efforts - in spite of Invelos seeming to be end-of-life - to make a great program even greater!

Yeah, patience is a virtue.  Especially necessary in the Profiler world.

Still waiting for Ken's announcement of DVDPOP.
